UEMS Division of IFSO-EC
What is the UEMS division of IFSO-EC?
The UEMS Division of IFSO-EC is also part of the UEMS Section of Surgery. It provides guidance on training and professional practice in metabolic and bariatric surgery across Europe, aiming to enhance education in obesity surgery and improve patient care.
What are the main objectives?
The division's primary goal is to promote and maintain the highest standards in metabolic-bariatric surgery through high-quality education, training, and accreditation, not just in Europe but globally. To achieve this, the division has developed a Curriculum and a Syllabus.
Candidates' knowledge and skills are assessed through the European Board of Surgery Qualification (EBSQ) examination in metabolic-bariatric surgery, organized by the UEMS Division. Successful candidates earn the title Fellow of the European Board of Surgery (FEBS) in Metabolic-Bariatric Surgery.

Fellowship of the European Board of Surgery
The EBSQ examination in metabolic-bariatric surgery evaluates whether a candidate has the necessary knowledge and skills to practice as a specialist in this field upon completing their training.
To obtain the FEBS title, candidates must complete a two-step assessment:
- Eligibility assessment (Part I) – Verification of qualifications and experience
- Examination (Part II) – Written and oral assessments
Earning the FEBS title signifies excellence and professional competence. It reflects the European effort to standardize, harmonize, and ensure quality in surgical education.
Legal Recognition
Currently, the FEBS title does not provide automatic legal recognition for independent practice within the EU or other countries. However, national authorities may individually recognize it, and more countries are integrating the Board examination into their accreditation systems.
Examination
The EBSQ Examination in Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery is held annually during the IFSO-EC Congress. The next examination will take place on May 6th, 2026, in Malaga, Spain.
Conclusion
The UEMS Division of Metabolic-Bariatric Surgery plays a key role in setting high standards for metabolic and bariatric surgery through structured education, accreditation, and examinations. The FEBS title is a recognized indicator of professional competence, supporting the ongoing European efforts in medical standardization. While it does not grant automatic legal recognition, its acceptance is increasing among national medical authorities.
